Barbecue contest canceled after only

11 contestants enter

A lack of entries led organizers of the third annual Blazin' Butts-n-Brisket Barbecue contest to cancel this year's event, which was to take place Oct. 18 at Tom Varn Park. Brooksville Parks and Recreation director Mike Walker said the event had only drawn 11 confirmed contestants, and organizers felt the number would not have been enough to be successful. Last year's contest drew 26 entrants from throughout Florida.

Canine team to graduate

A graduation ceremony for Brooksville Police's new canine team will be at 11 a.m. today at the Brooksville Police Department, 87 Veterans Ave. Officer Joe Nelson and Koda will be presented with a Certificate of Completion from the Orange County Sheriff's K-9 Drug Detection Training school. Also, Brooksville Police will introduce their second canine team, Officer Shane Derryberry and his German shepherd, who has yet to be named, who will receive training Nov. 1-Dec. 3.

Man faces drug charges

A Stock Island man faces two charges of trafficking the prescription drug Oxycodone after deputies say they saw him dropping a bag of the pills during a traffic stop Wednesday. Authorities said Joseph Perez, 40, had been under surveillance after they received information that he was wanted in connection with in an armed robbery in Orange County. Deputies discovered 90 Oxycodone pills after stopping Perez's vehicle near Yontz and Cobb roads. A search of a Brooksville home where Perez had been staying yielded another 830 Oxycodone pills along with a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Perez was being held at the Hernando County Jail on $600,000 bail.

Hear about mental illness

As part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, the National Association on Mental Illness, NAMI Hernando, will present "Decriminalizing Mental Illness ... Our Progress" from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Hernando County Jail, 16425 Spring Hill Drive, south of Brooksville. The program will include a group of experts exploring the facts about the newly established Mental Health Court and discussion of the mental health issues facing Hernando County. Tours of the jail will be available. For information, call (352) 684-0004.

Correction

The payout for the Port Hudson Fishing Club's annual Fall Fishing Tournament, Oct. 24 to 26, is $7,500. An incorrect figure was reported in Tuesday's edition.
