It's a great time to be celebrating in Tampa Bay, what with the World Series and all, but the Sheriff's Office will be out tonight looking for those who overdo it. Deputies will conduct a sobriety checkpoint starting tonight at 10 at the Kmart at 26996 U.S. 19 N. The checkpoint will run through 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The Sheriff's Office says there were 1,533 alcohol-related crashes in Pinellas County in 2006, resulting in 48 deaths.
TARPON SPRINGS
Ex-city manager heads to Pasco
The former city manager of Tarpon Springs has been hired to oversee Port Richey's growth management department and redevelopment projects. Ellen Posivach, 56, began work Tuesday as assistant city manager to head Community Redevelopment Agency projects such as resurfacing and sidewalk installation, and to take the helm of growth management, formerly known as the building department. City Manager Richard Reade hired Posivach on a three-month trial basis, allowing her to keep her options open to pursue other interests. If she stays on a full year, she will earn an annual salary of $60,000. Former building official Ed Winch will provide other services on a contract basis. Posivach left Tarpon Springs in April amid city commissioners' concerns about her management style.

Transportation talk for ESOL residents
To give county residents who do not consider English their primary language help with transportation issues, an ESOL presentation, "Transportation in Pinellas,'' will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Pinellas Park Middle School, 6940 70th Ave. Gabrielle Donaldson of the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority will discuss free bus rides, passes and discounts, how to apply for special transportation needs, schedules and maps, and employment opportunities. Clarification
A story Tuesday said that Gary E. Averill Jr., the man accused of murdering Michael Harris, believed Harris had been abusing children. The story did not make clear that authorities have no evidence to suggest Harris was involved in child abuse.
