Poker run to honor soldier, raise money

A memorial ride and poker run for Army Spc. Cody Grater will take place on Saturday. Sign-up will be at 10 a.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8681, 18940 Drayton St., at County Line Road, Shady Hills. The cost is $10 per hand. The first bike will be out at noon, and the last one in will be at 5 p.m. Stops include the Florida National Cemetery and the VFW Post near Bushnell, Marine Corps League Detachment 708 west of Brooksville, VFW Post 10209 in Spring Hill, and VFW Post 9236 in Hernando Beach. Food and music will be at the last stop. Grater, an Army specialist from Spring Hill, was killed in Iraq in 2007. Proceeds will go to the new skate ramp at Stewy's Skate Park. Call (352) 232-0373.

SPRING HILL

Last day to apply to exhibit in show

Today is the deadline for exhibitor applications for the Spring Hill Art League's 35th annual Fall Harvest of Art, which will be Saturday and Sunday at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave. This year's event will include a juried fine art and craft show, along with youth activities, live music and food. Free workshop on keeping weight off

The Foundation for Wellness Professionals will present a free workshop, "5 Secrets to Permanent Weight Loss," from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave. The speaker will be Mary Bristow, acupuncture physician and doctor of Oriental medicine. Participants will learn why diets alone don't work and how to lose weight and keep it off. Space is limited; reservations required. Call (352) 799-1882.

Orientation for new commissioners

An orientation session for newly elected county commissioners Jim Adkins and John Druzbick will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Hernando County Recreation Department's Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. The session will include an overview of county government services. County staffers and other elected officials will attend. The session is open to the public.
