Birthday party for shelter chief benefits pet cause
Humane Society of the Nature Coast has an open house birthday celebration for director Joanne Schoch from noon to 7 p.m. today at the shelter at Wiscon and Mobley roads. The event will include music and refreshments. Those attending are asked not to bring a gift for Schoch, but instead to make a donation to the shelter or adopt a pet. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the plight of homeless pets and showcase the Zootoo $1 Million Makeover Contest, in which the local shelter now ranks No. 14, with the top 20 shelters eligible to compete for the makeover. Youths invited to join United Way board
Friday is the deadline for youths to apply to serve as ex officio board members on the United Way of Hernando County's board of directors. Three positions are available. The positions are voluntary, with hours that can be used toward scholarship programs. Student directors will serve two consecutive terms their 11th and 12th grade years, or until they graduate. Lectures target digestive problems
The Foundation for Wellness Professionals will offer a free health workshop, "End Digestive Problems," from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive. Another class will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the same location, and another from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the West Hernando Branch Library on Cortez Boulevard. This workshop is for those who suffer from acid reflux, hiatal hernia, irritable bowel, ulcers, Crohn's disease and other digestive problems. Participants will learn about natural, nondrug solutions. The speaker will be Mary Bristow, acupuncturist and doctor of Oriental medicine. Space is limited and reservations are required. For information, call (352) 799-1882.
