Phony doctor gets probation in plea deal

A 50-year-old Weeki Wachee man who posed as a doctor on the Internet received three years of probation Thursday as part of a plea deal. Authorities arrested Gary Lloyd in September and charged him with unlicensed practice of a health care profession after he claimed a bogus medical degree and fraudulent medical practice through a Web site. Lloyd, who works in pharmaceutical sales, was adjudicated guilty on three lesser charges of claiming a fictitious degree, said Assistant State Attorney Rob Lewis.

Cannery reopens to thrifty foodies

Hernando County Parks and Recreation has announced the Little Rock Cannery will reopen Tuesday. The cannery is at 15487 Citrus Way, at U.S. 98 N, north of Brooksville. The facility will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The cannery is a place to can and preserve produce, meat and fish. Visitors can learn food preservation techniques in the community kitchen. Call (352) 540-4306.

Buy Bingo Bash tickets by Monday

Those wishing to participate in the annual Bingo Bash sponsored by the Brookridge Woman's Club must buy tickets before Monday. The bash will be March 21 at the clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St. Payout is $3,200. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., with games starting at 10 a.m. Tickets are $40, which includes a doughnut, homemade lunch, coffee and iced tea. Call Norma Rankin at (352) 597-3530.

Flea market helps scholarship fund

Hernando County School Nutrition Association will host its annual flea market from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 7 at Springstead High School, 3300 Mariner Blvd. Vendors are welcome to participate; spaces are $7. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund for a culinary arts student.
