Author Jay Asher speaks at Tampa Prep Nov. 13

Author talk: Jay Asher, author of 13 Reasons Why and The Future of Us, will hold a presentation and book signing at Tampa Preparatory School at 7 p.m. Tuesday. He will also work with students at the school throughout the day. The 7 p.m. presentation and book signing will take place in the Student Commons on the third floor and is open to the public.

School choice information: There will be two parent information meetings for the first Hillsborough Choice Options application period:

Thursday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 4401 Cypress St.

Jan. 8, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Blake High School, 1701 N Boulevard.

Hillsborough Choice Options offers opportunities for families to apply to a magnet program, school choice or career and technical education program. The first application period begins for all students on Dec. 4. The application period for middle and high school options ends Jan. 9. The application period for elementary school options ends Feb. 14.

Food drive: The Jesuit High School annual Thanksgiving Food Drive continues through Friday. Food baskets will be delivered Nov. 18.

Jesuit is working with four Boys and Girls Clubs in the Tampa Bay area. The Jesuit Dads' Club is providing 100 turkeys for the baskets.

Thanksgiving concert: The Tampa Preparatory School Thanksgiving Convocation featuring the upper school and middle school band, middle school chorus, chamber chorus, concert chorus, string ensemble, guest speakers and student artwork is from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 19in the Peifer Library. A second performance will be held that night at 7 p.m.

Faculty awards: The College Board recognized counselor Lamarr Buggs as Southern Regional Counselor of the Year at the Southern Regional Forum on Oct. 24.

Freedom High School social studies teacher Ambareen Ameenuddin was named the Warren Tracy Beginning Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Florida Council for Social Studies.

Scholarships: Geico visited St. Peter Claver Catholic School on Oct. 30 to announce that it would contribute $2 million to Step Up For Students, the nonprofit that administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Geico's most recent contribution will fund scholarships for more than 447 low-income Florida students.

This is the third year Geico has contributed to the scholarship program. The company has contributed $7.8 million as a corporate partner since 2010, which has funded 1,828 scholarships. St. Peter Claver has 100 students participating in the scholarship program this year.
