Barbershop chorus plans garage sale
The Hernando Hills Hi-Lites women's barbershop chorus will have a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 13174 Hazelcrest St. Shoppers will be serenaded by members of the chorus and their D'Lites Quartet.
The Hi-Lites is a chartered member of Harmony Inc. A portion of the funds raised will be donated to Special Students Support Group of Hernando County. For information, call Tessie at (352) 686-4122.

The Nature Coast Bridge Academy will offer the following lessons:

Golf tournament takes place Oct. 23
The National Association of Retired Law Enforcement Officers will host its annual golf tournament at 8 a.m. Oct. 23 at Rivard Golf and Country Club, 18001 Rivard Blvd., off U.S. 41, south of Brooksville.
After the tournament there will be food, beer and prizes at the clubhouse.
Kia Motors is donating a car for the hole-in-one contest.

BROOKSVILLE
Water district seeks input from public
Southwest Florida Water Management District is seeking public input about the order in which minimum flows and levels for lakes, rivers, streams and aquifers in the District will be determined. A meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Swiftmud headquarters at 2379 Broad St., south of Brooksville.
The meeting will provide an opportunity for local government and residents to be a part of the scheduling of minimum flows and levels. The revised schedule will be considered for adoption at the governing board's meeting in October.
The adopted Minimum Flows and Levels Priority List and Schedule for 2009 is available on the Web site at www.watermatters .org/projects/mfl. The draft 2010 list will be made available on the site soon.

Budget, economic meetings canceled
The Hernando County Budget and Finance Committee meeting scheduled for Oct. 6 and the Business and Economic Committee meeting scheduled for Oct. 20 have been canceled.

Voice appreciation for military during show
The Military Appreciation Show on WWJB-AM 1450 will present the second Operation Appreciation marathon call-in program on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
Listeners may call into the radio station to voice their well-wishes and appreciation to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The show will start at 1 p.m. and continue to at least 10 p.m.
Calls will be recorded and converted to compact disc, then sent to troops overseas.
Hernando County students will be able to participate in an essay contest. All entrants will be eligible to win prizes through random drawings for youth-related items worth at least $250, including a $250 savings bond donated by SunTrust bank. Students' essays should be about the Vietnam War, and how veterans who served were treated upon returning home. One essay from each grade level will be selected and authors will be invited to read their essays during the show.
Sponsorships are needed for the prizes for students; the deadline is Oct. 15.

Week spotlights mental illness
The Hernando County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness/NAMI Hernando will host two events to kick off Mental Illness Awareness Week, Oct. 5 to 11:
•A program will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The 90-minute program will feature Ed Smart as keynote speaker. Smart will discuss how mental illness changed his family after his 14-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, was kidnapped from their Utah home in 2002 and held hostage for nine months. Smart is also the author of Bringing Elizabeth Home.
Other speakers will include Hernando County Sheriff Richard Nugent, who will share his views about how untreated mental illness affects the efforts of law enforcement officers.
The event will also include a silent auction and the presentation of the NAMI Iris Award to Circuit Judge Richard Tombrink Jr. for his oversight of Hernando County's Mental Health Court.
•A candlelight stroll will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Beautiful Mind Center, 10554 Spring Hill Drive (in the Brothers I and II Plaza). Participants will walk about 1 mile west to First United Methodist Church on Spring Hill Drive, where an outdoor prayer service will be led by Pastor Bill McCloud. When the group returns to Beautiful Mind, refreshments will be served.

Dinner/dance to raise funds to help troops
The second annual Gifts From Home benefit dinner and dance will be Oct. 17 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.
The event will include raffles, including a Key West basket valued more than $1,000. Also, a Richard Petty driving experience driving suit will be auctioned.
Those who bring an item for the troops will receive a free raffle ticket.
Tickets are $16.50 and can be bought at the VFW canteen or by calling Linda Kidwell at (352) 684-4185.
Proceeds will be used to buy supplies for troops serving overseas. Gifts from Home Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that fills requests for troops serving overseas, for items such as hygiene items, packaged treats, logo-emblazoned T-shirts and games.
