Darby

Bellamys help oil spill victims with concert

The Bellamy Brothers, natives of Darby who also own a home off the Panhandle coast, are headlining a benefit concert to help aid victims of the BP oil spill. "Festival of the Beach 2010" will start at noon July 25 on Panama City Beach, hosted by Spinnaker's Beach Club and 103.5 Hank FM. The Pasco duo will feature special guest the Shane Wooten Band of Ocala, which just released a new single, Running with a Redneck Crowd, featuring the Bellamy Brothers. Wooten is also a publicist for the Bellamy Brothers. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be donated to BeachAid, Surfrider and ReclaimOurAmerica. The concept caps a busy time for Howard and David, who recently released The Anthology Vol. 1, a combination of popular hits and a few new releases. The compilation, which is climbing the Swiss charts, is partly due to their latest record deal between the Bellamy Brothers and Universal Records Switzerland, where the album is No. 6 this week (up from 16 after only a few weeks) and is continuing to climb. Their U.S. single, Jalapenos, a satire about political correctness that was banned by some radio stations, is approaching 250,000 plays on YouTube.

Book and toy drive helps kids in crisis

The Waldenbooks at Gulf View Square mall is having a book and toy drive for kids in need beginning Tuesday and running through Aug. 30. The company, along with Borders, has teamed up with the Kids Wish Network to provide books and toys for kids in crisis — those in hospitals and homeless shelters, as well as others in advocacy programs. These drives are made possible by customers who purchase books, toys and other items in the stores to donate to the charity. "We are so excited to be partnering with Kids Wish Network," said Jackie McDougall, district manager of the Borders stores on Florida's west coast. "It is an amazing organization and this drive is definitely something we're proud of. No matter what's going on in the world and even with the economy the way it is, people are still so generous." Waldenbooks is inside the mall at 9409 U.S. 19 in Port Richey. For other participating stores in the area, contact your local Borders or Waldenbooks store. For information about Kids Wish Network go to www.kidswishnetwork.org or call toll-free at 1-888-918-9004.
