Title Boxing Club, 889 E Bloomingdale Ave., will teach a self-defense class from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in honor of Queena, the Bloomingdale Library attack survivor who was raped, beaten and left to die outside the library in April 2008. The attack left Queena unable to walk, talk, see or eat on her own, and her recovery has been ongoing.
The class will include self-defense techniques, a warmup and a cool-down. Title Boxing Club is asking for $20 donations from participants. With a $20 donation, participants will receive a pair of hand wraps in addition to the workout. The normal membership fee of $99 will also be waived for those who attend the fundraiser. New members will receive a one-time 30 percent discount on gloves.
Proceeds will benefit Queena's ongoing medical expenses, which total about $70,000 a year. Medicaid covers $1,500 per year.
Her treatment includes speech, physical and occupational therapies.
The community can follow Queena's progress and donate on her website, JoinQueena.com. Donations can also be made payable to the Bloomingdale Library Assault Victim Trust at any Bank of Tampa or SunTrust Bank.
