Deputy in crash now under investigation

A Pasco sheriff's deputy who was involved in a crash Monday on Moon Lake Road now faces an internal affairs investigation.

Francisco Mendes, who is a certified law enforcement and jail deputy, was not ticketed in the crash but may have violated agency policies, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol's report, Mendes was driving southbound on Moon Lake Road about 9 a.m. with his emergency lights activated. There were two cars in front of him. The first car pulled over to let Mendes pass, the report says, but the second car attempted to go around the first car.

Mendes also tried to pass and was sideswiped by an oncoming car in the northbound lane. The other two southbound cars also collided.

There were no major injuries. Doll would not say where Mendes was headed with his lights activated, citing the open investigation.

He was wearing dark pants, a green military-type jacket with a backpack underneath, a black wool cap, gloves and a mask covering his face.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office toll-free at 1-800-854-2862.
