Driver aimed shotgun at family, police say

A 28-year-old man was arrested after a road rage incident Monday in which police say he pointed a loaded shotgun at a family with three small children in the back seat.

Matthew Tweel was driving north on U.S. 19 about 11:45 a.m. when he cut off the family's Chevrolet Malibu, the New Port Richey Police Department said. The Malibu had two adults and three children inside: two 6-month-old infants and a 2-year-old.

Police said the passenger in the Malibu gave Tweel the middle finger and shouted at him.

Tweel hit the brakes on his black Dodge Charger and pulled up next to the Malibu, then pointed what appeared to be a rifle at the family, before taking off again, police said.

Tweel was stopped by an officer soon after and, according to reports, he had a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded .40-caliber pistol in the car, as well as Oxycodone in a silver cylinder hanging off his key chain.

Tweel, of 7746 Provance Lane in New Port Richey, is charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of carrying a concealed firearm and two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He is being held in the Land O'Lakes jail in lieu of $45,000 bail.

Man dies after being hit crossing U.S. 19

A 50-year-old man was struck by a car and killed late Monday as he tried to cross U.S. 19 at Buena Vista Lane.

Edgardo Montes Jr. of Holiday was walking east across U.S. 19. He was struck while in the southbound right turn lane by a 2000 Ford van driven by Frank E. Dodson Jr., 40, of Lecanto, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Paramedics pronounced Montes dead at the scene.

The patrol is still investigating to determine whether any charges will be filed.
