Brooksville auction will benefit family of deputy killed in crash


Auction will help family of late deputy

An auction to benefit the family of Hernando County sheriff's Deputy John Mecklenburg will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Miss Kitty's Hilltop Lounge, 504 N Broad St. The auctioneer will be Charlie Puett, owner of Quality Auction. Donations of auction items are appreciated and can be dropped off at Miss Kitty's; pickups can be arranged. Mecklenburg died July 3 after he lost control of his patrol car and hit a tree during a high-speed chase. Call (352) 796-3475 or (352) 796-0875.

Program to give away backpacks

The Hernando County Association of Realtors, in conjunction with Friends of the Children Inc., will sponsor Operation Backpack at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at the Jerome Brown Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane. The program offers free backpacks and school supplies for Hernando County children entering kindergarten through eighth grade. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The Realtors association is also selling $5 raffle tickets to win a 55-inch Vizio flat-screen television valued at $950. The drawing will be Monday. Proceeds benefit Operation Backpack. Free clinic needs volunteer dentists

Crescent Community Clinic has a need for additional dentists to volunteer services for the clinic's bi-monthly dental clinic for adults who have oral infections or need extractions. Practicing and retired dentists with active licenses can volunteer, and are provided with sovereign immunity protection under the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program. Dental assistants are also needed. Dental clinics are offered on either Monday or Friday. For details, call the clinic at (352) 610-9916. Crescent is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that provides free medical, dental and mental health services to uninsured adults ages 18-64. The clinic is at 5244 Commercial Way. Potential patients should call the clinic between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays to request an appointment to complete paperwork.
