A 49-year-old Clearwater man was found dead over the weekend inside a charred travel trailer in central Florida. The body of Thomas Osborne of Clearwater was found Sunday morning in Bithlo, a small community east of Orlando. Relatives told Orange County authorities that Osborne had parked his trailer near his half-brother's home for the New Year holiday, and said he had been depressed recently. The fire is under investigation.

Sewage spills into Stevenson's Creek

After 2,500 gallons of sewage spilled into Stevenson's Creek on Sunday, the city has posted signs warning people about the contamination, which will likely persist for a couple of days. "There's no need to fret about anything unless you were going to go swimming in the creek," said public utilities director Tracy Mercer, who noted that few people take that swim in January. The sewage spill started when a metal plug blew out of a 16-inch pipe at the city's Marshall Street plant in North Greenwood, which discharges treated wastewater into the creek. After the leak appeared, workers piled sandbags to contain another 4,800 gallons of sewage sludge at the site before it could spill into the creek.

Department names firefighter of year

Dunedin Fire Department firefighters have named Craig Brown the 2008 firefighter of the year. Brown, 34, is an acting lieutenant, the secretary/treasurer of the firefighters union and volunteers to lead fundraisers and other department initiatives. He lives in New Port Richey with his wife, who is expecting their first child. Brown supervised a crew in fighting a house fire and caring for a badly burned victim, and made sure the firefighters could talk with someone once the emergency was over. Fire Chief Bud Meyer wrote in an e-mail, "Craig's upbeat attitude, professional skills and willingness to go well beyond what is expected of him are attributes that serve as an example to all firefighters who aspire to rise to the top of their profession.''
