Concert will benefit library rape victim

"Tears for a Flower" is an upcoming concert to benefit the young woman who was raped earlier this year outside the Bloomingdale Library.

The show features Bobby Hendricks, an original member of the Drifters; country singer Marti Carroll; American Bandstand performer Mary Swan; and local groups Rafael & Co. and the TDC Band.

The April 24 rape left the victim, then an 18-year-old East Bay High student, blind and unable to speak or walk.

The benefit is noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at the International Independent Showmen's Association, 6915 Riverview Drive.

Leathernecks Club to hold Marine Corps Birthday Ball

The Sun City Center Leathernecks Club marks the Marine Corps' 233rd birthday with its own Marine Corps Birthday Ball on Nov. 7.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour in the Atrium Building in Sun City Center.

The party includes a catered dinner and entertainment.

Active-duty Marines hold a formal banquet and ball each year to celebrate the service's birthday. Several traditions go along with the ball, including honoring the youngest and oldest Marines present.

The Sun City Center ball is open to the public. Beer and soft drinks are provided or attendees can bring their own beverage.

Taste of South Shore event is Monday at Little Harbor

Sample food, wine and drinks at the third annual Taste of South Shore from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

Participating restaurants and businesses include Beanies Sports Bar and Grill, AJ's Catering, Vocelli's Pizza, Cherry's, Mimi's Cafe, PRP Wines, Village Inn, Ruskin Cut Rate Liquor, Taste of Home Entertaining, Old Castle Tavern, the Satin Chef, Sally O'Brien's, Big Dog Barbeque, Hydro Harvest and Sunset Grill at Little Harbor.

The event is at Little Harbor, 611 Destiny Drive, in Ruskin.

Tickets are $20 and benefit the Mary and Martha House, which provides services to women and children in crisis.

Magazine lauds Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium owner

Kelly Bock, operations manager of the Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium, was recently recognized by Gourmet News magazine as one of the "Top 20 under 40" in the food and kitchenware industry.

Bock oversees daily operations, marketing, merchandise buying and internet communications for the Rolling Pin, a locally owned and operated store and cooking school.

The store offers kitchen tools and accessories, gourmet foods, and other items, as well as a variety of classes.
