Hillsborough County celebrated the opening of the expanded and renovated Jackson Springs Community Center on Monday, offering residents a first-class complex for a variety of recreational activities.
The opening ceremony included remarks from county officials and community leaders, and a weightlifting demonstration by the Deadlifting Grannies, a group of active, older women involved in competitive powerlifting.
The year-long, $2.2 million project included renovation of an existing gym and skate shop, and construction of a new, 5,772-square-foot building that houses a weight room, wood-floor dance classroom with mirrored walls, community meeting space, and administrative offices.
The work included repainting the gym, installing remote-controlled basketball backboards, and improving the air conditioning system, restrooms, sidewalks and drainage system.
The Jackson Springs Community Center, 8620 Jackson Springs Road, offers activities ranging from after-school programs for kids to weightlifting, basketball, pickleball, volleyball, a wide range of dance classes, mah jong, guitar lessons, and more. The complex includes a skate park, soccer field, playground, wireless internet connection, and meeting rooms for the public.
