Swiftmud will do controlled burns

The Southwest Florida Water Management District will conduct controlled burns through January on its Upper Hillsborough property 1 mile east of Zephyrhills. Approximately 500 acres will be burned in small, manageable units as weather permits. According to district land manager Kevin W. Love, burns are implemented to mimic natural fire cycles under a controlled situation. The goal is to avoid uncontrolled wildfires and maintain the ecological and wildlife habitat values. Crews will make every effort to keep smoke from impacting homes and roadways, but drivers should use extra caution if smoke affects their visibility.
