Donate snacks, hygiene items to our troops
Troops in the Middle East need candy, cookies, crackers, small canned fruits, canned meats and tuna, lip balm, bandannas, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, women's hygiene products and body wash. Donations can be dropped off at American Legion Post 7 at 1760 Turner St., Clearwater; the Army Recruiting Office at 11223 78th Ave. N, Seminole; and VFW Post 9272 at 10997 72nd Ave. N, Seminole. Cash donations are also needed to cover shipping. Checks should be made payable to UPS Store or Postmaster and mailed to P.O. Box 86223, Madeira Beach, FL 33738. New 5K race accepting entries
Online registration is open for the inaugural Morton Plant Mease Foundation's Prostate Cancer Awareness Race scheduled for Sept. 11 in Clearwater. The 5K will kick off at 7:30 a.m. at the Cheek-Powell Wellness Center and take runners through the Morton Plant Hospital campus and area waterfront neighborhoods. There will also be a Kids Dash at 9 a.m. To sign up, visit active.com and search for Morton Plant Mease. Registration fee is $25 until Aug. 31; $30 through Sept. 10; and $35 the day of the race. Registration fee for the Kids Dash is $10 through Sept. 11. Entry fees are nonrefundable. Online registration closes Sept. 10. Registration capacity is limited to 1,000. Railroad work will reroute traffic
CSX Transportation will be upgrading the railroad crossing on Race Track Road today through Aug. 22. All lanes will be closed at the crossing from Douglas Road to Monroe Business Park. Drivers will be redirected to Forest Lakes Boulevard, Pine Avenue, Commerce Boulevard or Douglas Road.

Arthur Murray to offer free lessons
In honor of National Dance Day, Arthur Murray Palm Harbor, 34930 U.S. 19 N, will offer free dance lessons between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. Festivities will also include an open dance party from 7 to 9 p.m. with a performance showcasing the studio's students from Lighthouse of Pinellas, a nonprofit that helps the blind and sight-impaired. The visually impaired dancers have been working on the performance for five weeks. The public is invited to attend. To receive the 30-minute private lesson, advance reservations are required.
