Donation drive to benefit Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranches' thrift stores

Donation drive today benefits thrift stores

The Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranches will conduct a donation drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, 18900 Cortez Blvd. A trailer will be on site where donations can be dropped off. At the same time, another trailer will be at the Timber Pines Performing Arts Center, where Timber Pines residents can drop off donations. All donations are welcome (cash, clothing, jewelry, furniture, etc.) and will benefit the organization's four thrift stores in Florida. For information, contact Lisa at (386) 208-3949.

Get tree seedlings free at park today

In honor of Florida Arbor Day, the Florida Forest Service will offer free tree seedlings from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Tom Varn Park pavilion, 301 Darby Lane. Various species will be available, and seedlings will be provided one per person, while supplies last. Information brochures about various forest management topics will also be available. Club will give away dresses

High school girls in need of a dress for the upcoming military ball or prom can get one for free this weekend. The Nature Coast Kiwanis Club will distribute free dresses from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during the flea market in the auditorium at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St. One dress per girl will be distributed until they are gone. Girls who cannot make it to the fairgrounds may contact Pat Herrmann at (352) 345-4427 to make alternate arrangements.

View manatees at open house

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Friends of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Three Sisters Springs, off Kings Bay Drive. The property offers an opportunity to view manatees from the boardwalk, where approximately 200 manatees have been using the springs during the recent cold snaps. Free shuttles to the property will be provided from the southeast corner of the Kings Bay Shopping Plaza on U.S. 19, from 8:50 a.m. to 4 p.m., running every five to 10 minutes. On-site parking will be prohibited, except for those with mobility-impaired designated vehicles. The event is being held in conjunction with this weekend's Manatee Festival in downtown Crystal River.
