DUI checkpoint Friday night on Northcliffe in Spring Hill

DUI CHECKPOINT planned friday ON NORTHCLIFFE

The Hernando Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday near Northcliffe Baptist Church, 10515 Northcliffe Blvd. The checkpoint is part of an effort to combat impaired driving. Visit, sign banner for SEAL team

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 has made a banner thanking the Navy SEAL team for killing Osama bin Laden. The community is invited to stop by and sign the banner. The post is at 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, off Anderson Snow Road. The banner will be presented to the commander at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Surrogate parent training offered

The Hernando County school district's exceptional student education department is in need of "surrogate parents." Training will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the ESE office at 900 Emerson Road. A surrogate parent is a volunteer appointed to act in the interest of an exceptional student who doesn't have a parent who can make educational decisions. The surrogate parent works with the school to plan the child's special education services. Those interested must be U.S. citizens, Florida residents, at least 18 years old, not currently employed by the local School Board or any agency involved in the education or care of the child, and have no conflicts with the interests of the child. Fire station open house on Saturday

The Hernando County Fire Rescue District, in cooperation with the Brooksville fire station, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the station at 85 Veterans Ave. There will be refreshments, a hot dog-eating contest and activities. Call (352) 540-3809.

Arc's 5K race, fun run on Saturday

The Arc Nature Coast's annual Spring Lake 5K Run will be Saturday on the Arc's property at 5283 Neff Lake Road, east of Brooksville. Along with the 5K, there will be a 2-mile fun run/walk. Registration is at 7 a.m., with the race starting at 8 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers. Participants will be treated to a post-race food fest.
