Fivay High School student critical, but stable, after being hit by SUV

Girl hit while crossing street still in hospital

The Fivay High School sophomore hit by an SUV on Thursday as she walked from school remained in the trauma center Friday afternoon at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Ocean-Leigh Mc-Kenzie Marshall, 16, was in critical but stable condition, according to hospital staff. She was hit as she crossed Chicago Avenue just after 2 p.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The impact hurled her into the path of a pickup truck whose driver was able to stop before it would have rolled over her. The extent of her injuries is unclear. Meanwhile, schools superintendent Kurt Browning "has spoken to the sheriff about increasing patrols there," said district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. She added that high schools generally do not have crossing guards, and noted that the decision to add security measures to the area would be outside the district's jurisdiction, as the crash happened off district property.

Charity Chics starts new chapter

More than four years ago, the first chapter of Charity Chics was founded in Tampa by Lisa Ford and Karen Gillman, who wanted to bring women together not only for business and marketing, but also to give back to the community. Now the second chapter of Charity Chics is beginning in Land O'Lakes for Pasco and north Tampa women. Jeannie Holliday and Jodi Perez, co-owners of Independent Financial Services in Land O'Lakes, are starting the new chapter. Each chapter chooses three local nonprofits to support each year. In the past, Charity Chics has supported such organizations as Dress for Success, PACE Center for Girls, Metropolitan Ministries and Bay Area Legal Services. Each chapter allows only one professional per industry. Once an industry slot has been filled, no other professionals in that field can join the chapter. A kickoff has been scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Independent Financial Services Office at 20635 Amberfield Drive, Suite 102, in Land O'Lakes (in the Offices of Devonwood business complex.) For more information or to RSVP, call (813) 908-2701 or email: Erica.erickson@independent financialservices.net.

Teen faces new charge in break-ins

Detectives leveled another charge Thursday against a teenager identified as part of a group that broke into Pasco schools. Joshua Jakeem Dennis, 17, and others broke into Chasco Middle School on Feb. 19 and stole $9,122 worth of computer equipment, a Pasco sheriff's report states. A witness who acted as the lookout during the burglary gave detectives his name. Dennis was already in custody on burglary charges after detectives connected him to a break-in at Ridgewood High on Feb. 27, in which 37 iPods, 34 Apple laptops and one iPad were stolen. Alexis Rafeal Ortiz, 19, and Eric Rodriquez, 17, have been arrested in connection with that burglary. Authorities have put a price to the burglaries: $172,875.
