SPRING HILL

Dinner and dance benefit troops fund

The second annual Gifts From Home benefit dinner and dance will be Oct. 17 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

The event will include raffles, among them a Key West basket valued at more than $1,000. Also, a Richard Petty driving experience driving suit will be auctioned.

Those who bring an item for the troops will receive a free raffle ticket.

Tickets are $16.50 and can be bought at the VFW canteen or by calling Linda Kidwell at (352) 684-4185.

Proceeds will be used to buy supplies for troops serving overseas. Gifts from Home Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that fills requests for troops serving overseas for items such as hygiene items, packaged treats, logo-emblazoned T-shirts and games.

BROOKSVILLE

Get close to nature at Chinsegut center

Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following events and programs:

• Chinsegut fungal talk and walk, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Provided by James Kimbrough with the University of Florida.

• Butterfly and wildflower walk at Janet Butterfield Brooks Preserve, 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Meet off Buczak Road.

• Reptile and Amphibian Festival, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 10. The event will feature reptile and amphibian exhibits, walks, talks and demonstrations, as well as a puppet show and door prizes.

• Junior Butterfly Watching Workshop, 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 17. The workshop is for youths 16 and younger. They will learn some of the common butterflies and observe them in their natural habitat. Children younger than 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

• Chinsegut Night Walk, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 30. Participants will listen and look for bats, frogs, owls and other creatures of the night. Bring a flashlight and insect repellent.

• Pioneer Day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7. Featuring living arts demonstrations of the past, such as hand-cranked ice cream, broom-making, lumberjack demonstration, spinning, horse-drawn wagon rides, butter churning, rope-making, open-hearth cooking and archery exhibits.

WEEKI WACHEE

Bingo games begin later this month

The Weeki Wachee Area Club will offer bingo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, starting Oct. 10, at the club, 7442 Shoal Line Blvd.

Dawn Center to benefit from event

The Dawn Center will present its annual Domestic Violence Breakfast, "It's Time to Talk About It," at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court.

Tiffany Carr, executive director of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will speak. Tickets are $20 per person; reservations are required by Friday. RSVP to (352) 684-7191.

The event is sponsored by Nick Sessa. Funds raised will benefit the Dawn Center, Hernando County's domestic and sexual violence center.

BROOKSVILLE

Good Neighbor Trail opens with celebration

The city of Brooksville invites bicyclists, joggers and walkers to the grand opening celebration of the Good Neighbor Trail at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at the corner of S Brooksville Avenue and Russell Street.

There will be live entertainment and refreshments. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the old train station and genealogy museum.

Church will hold Columbus Day dinner

A Columbus Day celebration dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Blvd.

Luncheon and auction with inspiring speaker

The Brooksville/Spring Hill Christian Women's Connection invites women and men to a luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane.

There will be a "Bid on a Star" silent auction, with bidding starting at 11 a.m.

The inspirational speaker will be Robert Faust from Gotha, whose topic will be "When You Wish Upon a Star, Do Your Dreams Come True or Are You Living in Fantasy Land?"

The cost is $13.50. Free child care is available with advance registration.

Norwegian dinner for Leif Erikson Day

Sons of Norway Lodge 607 will host a cultural evening to celebrate Leif Erikson Day at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6139 Spring Hill Drive.

A dinner of lapskaus (Norwegian stew) will be served, along with a variety of Norwegian desserts. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for youth ages 12-16 and free for children younger than 12. The public is welcome.

Cattle Barons' Ball benefits cancer group

Hernando County's fourth annual Cattle Barons' Ball to benefit the American Cancer Society will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court. The theme will be "Stetsons and Stilettos."

The goal for the event is to raise $52,000 for society's Reaching Out to Cancer Kids program, supporting the ROCK Camp, research and scholarships.

Arc Nature Coast reviews year's work

The Arc Nature Coast will host its annual membership meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Community Cafe, 4508 Commercial Way (St. Lucy Plaza).

Those in attendance will learn about what the Arc has accomplished during the past year, as well as the goals for the coming fiscal year, including plans for building the education center and regional evacuation shelter for those with developmental disabilities.

The Springstead High School football program will host a flea market fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Springstead Theater parking lot, 3300 Mariner Blvd.

Mystery Poker Run helps military families

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8681 will host a Mystery Poker Run on Oct. 17 to benefit the Military Family Emergency Relief Fund.

The run will start at VFW Post 7987 at 7445 Chester McKay Drive, New Port Richey, and end at Post 8681 at 18940 Drayton St., on the south side of County Line Road.

Registration will open at 10 a.m. The last vehicle out will be at noon. The run will include six stops, with the last vehicle in by 5 p.m. Each stop will include a 50/50 raffle.

At Post 8681 after the run, there will be a barbecue, entertainment, dancing, door prizes and the drawings for the 50/50 raffles.

All modes of transportation can be used in the run. The cost is $10 per vehicle, with $5 per extra card.

COUNTYWIDE

Homeless Coalition needs your help

The Mid Florida Homeless Coalition is seeking help in its effort to raise $12,000 by Oct. 31 to match funds for a grant received by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

With this grant came a requirement to collect local matching dollars. The coalition provides services to those in need in Hernando, Citrus, Sumter and Lake counties.

All donations are tax-deductible and can be made to the Mid Florida Homeless Coalition Inc. and mailed to P.O. Box 1527, Eustis, FL 32727-1527.

Club shows how to carry vital e-records

The annual Hernando Computer Club Expo will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 12 in the fellowship hall at Grace Presbyterian Church, 8375 Spring Hill Drive.

This year's event will feature exhibitions of the various classes offered by the club, as well as exhibits by computer repair places, retailers carrying electronic devices, nonprofit organizations, online banking and other groups.

The featured exhibit will be a table devoted to "How a Key Chain Electronic Picture Frame Can Save Your Life." There will be demonstrations explaining how to create pictures of important medical information and how to load them into an e-frame, allowing paramedics and other medical professionals to turn on the device and read about allergies, medications and other details without needing to use a personal computer.
