Quartets offer serenades for loved ones

Quartets from the Hernando Harmonizers men's barbershop chorus will deliver singing valentines Friday, Saturday and Sunday to residents and businesspeople throughout Hernando and Pasco counties.

Recipients will receive a serenade of two love songs, a silk red rose, a personalized valentine card and a photo of the occasion. Valentines will be delivered between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The cost is $40, with a portion of proceeds to benefit HPH Hospice. Clinic seeks recipes for new cookbook

Crescent Community Clinic is asking supporters to honor family chefs by sending in a donation and their favorite family member's recipe for the clinic's new cookbook.

In 50 words or less, participants may tell about their family's chef and about the recipe. Recipes and donations should be mailed by March 1 to the clinic, 5244 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, FL 34606.

All recipes will be printed in the cookbook, which will be for sale at the sixth annual Spring Fling Tea Party on April 30 at VFW Post 10209 in Spring Hill. Tickets for the Spring Fling are $25 and may be purchased at the clinic or by using PayPal at crescentclinic.org. Proceeds will support the clinic's women's health and wellness programs covering mammograms and pap tests.

Academy workshop explores Highwaymen

The Pasco-Hernando State College Encore Academy will offer "The Florida Highwaymen," a workshop exploring the history of African art, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at PHSC's Spring Hill Campus, 450 Beverly Court.

The Highwaymen created large numbers of relatively inexpensive landscape paintings, using construction materials in place of traditional art supplies. Not accepted by art galleries, the artists sold their paintings along roadsides throughout Florida.

The instructor is Charlene Jones. The workshop, which is open to adults, is $12 per person. Membership in the Encore Academy is not required. The registration deadline is Feb. 26. To RSVP, call (727) 816-3738.

Water authority board elects new officers

The Withlacoochee Regional Water Supply Authority's board of directors, representing Citrus, Hernando, Marion and Sumter counties, recently elected new officers. Citrus County Commissioner Dennis Damato will serve as chairman; Hernando County Commissioner Nick Nicholson will serve as vice chairman, and Marion County Commissioner Earl Arnett will serve as treasurer for the authority.

The next authority board of directors meeting will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lecanto Government Building, Room 166, 3600 W Sovereign Path, Lecanto.

Festival celebrates county's birthday

The Historic Hernando Preservation Society and the Hernando Historical Museum Association will co-host the 2016 Heritage Day, celebrating Hernando County's 173rd birthday. The main festival will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 27 at the 1885 Train Depot, 70 Russell St.

Three historic homes will be showcased for the 2016 Historic Home Tour, and all three of the association's museums will be open for tours, including the Countryman One Room Schoolhouse, the 1885 Train Depot and the May-Stringer House.

Festival admission is free. Tour tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Proceeds support the Hernando Historical Museum Association and the Historic Hernando Preservation Society.

Nature Coast students present short plays

Nature Coast Technical High School will present "Round and Round it Goes," four short plays staged in the round at the school's Shark Theatre, 4057 California St., at 2 and 7 p.m. Feb. 27.

The plays include Words, Words, Words by David Ives, The True Death of Socrates by Frank Higgins, The Leader by Eugene Lonesco and Daughters by Maya Levy.

Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. To reserve seats, call (352) 797-7088, ext. 296.

The Tin Can Tourists vintage trailer and motor coach club will have its 97th Winter Convention this month at the Sertoma Youth Ranch, 85 Myers Road. An open house for the public will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 27.

Visitors will be able to tour a collection of approximately 70 fully restored vintage travel trailers and motor homes from the '40s through '70s and meet the people who have restored them.

The open house is free, but there is a $5 parking fee. For information, call Forrest Bone, the club's royal chief, at (941) 302-2415.

Register now for Citizen's Academy

Registration is open for the next Hernando County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy, which will be on Thursdays from March 10 through April 21. Participants may attend sessions from 1 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 9 p.m.

The academy is intended to provide Hernando residents with an insider's view of the Sheriff's Office and the criminal justice system. Participants will observe demonstrations by police dog handlers, take a tour of the detention center and learn about forensics, uniform patrol, the traffic unit, administration, investigations, vice and narcotics, communications/911, the aviation and marine units, the mounted patrol, and legal issues and perspectives.

Graduates will have the option to ride along with a patrol deputy, observe in the Communications Center or tour the jail.

The Citizens Academy is free. Adults ages 18 and up are invited to participate, as are teenagers who are 16 or 17 years old and have an interest in law enforcement.
