BROOKSVILLE

Bridge work to close Lockhart at I-75

The Hernando County Department of Public Works has announced that both lanes of Lockhart Road over Interstate 75 east of Brooksville will be intermittently closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. The Florida Department of Transportation will be performing bridge maintenance. Drivers are urged to use caution.

Sheriff to step up traffic enforcement

In its ongoing attempt to combat traffic violations, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office will increase traffic enforcement on several main roads during March, the Sheriff's Office has announced. During the operation, speed enforcement will be conducted by deputies using both marked and unmarked vehicles. Additionally, deputies will be conducting both DUI and narcotics enforcement.

The Sheriff's Office reminds motorists to follow four major steps to ensure their safety while driving: obey speed limits, buckle up, do not drink and drive, and do not text and drive.

Similar operations are planned for the future.

Variety show to aid High Point fund

Neighbors Helping Neighbors, an Orange Blossom Showcase variety show, will be at 7 p.m. March 5 at the High Point Community Center, 12249 Club House Road. The event will benefit High Point's resident emergency fund. Clay Kirk will serve as master of ceremonies. Volunteer performers will include Kirk, Murilene Cronk, the duet of Cassidy Kinsman and Kelby Cornman, as Southern Sass, and Brittanie Powell. Festival to feature 115 artists at park

Art in the Park, an art, craft and music festival, will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 13 at Tom Varn Park, 306 Darby Lane. More than 115 artists will participate in a juried show featuring fine art, fine crafts and craft artist vendors. The festival will include live entertainment, a student art pavilion featuring a countywide exhibit of student art, a kids art zone, food, children's activities and an art boutique.

The event is free and includes a souvenir program. Parking is $5. For information, call (352) 279-5182.

Inventor's Challenge invites kids to create

AT&T and the Imagination Foundation have launched the Inventor's Challenge, an opportunity for pre-kindergarten through high school students to create novel, imaginative and possibly viable solutions to all sorts of problems. The challenge engages children in science, technology, engineering, art and math. Students are asked to brainstorm and create ways to help solve or improve a problem in their school or community. AT&T is making a $100,000 contribution to support the Imagination Foundation's innovative approaches to teach students creativity and problem solving. The challenge ends March 11.

'Puttin' on the Ritz' stars two sisters

The Hernando Performing Arts Guild will present Puttin' on the Ritz, featuring sisters Gracie and Lacy, at 7 p.m. March 19 at the Hernando High School Performing Arts Center, 790 Howell Ave.

The show will feature the duet's signature harmonies, vocals, tap dancing, comedy and retro wardrobe. Tickets are $25 per person. For information, call (352) 799-5577.

Storybook Forest to boost child literacy

The Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties will host its seventh annual Storybook Forest event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5 at Crews Lake Wilderness Park, 16739 Crews Lake Drive, to support Children's Week and early childhood literacy.

The event will feature a variety of children's entertainment, activities, crafts, music and complimentary food. Visitors can meet Clifford the Big Red Dog, Elmo, Curious George, Cat in the Hat and other storybook friends. There will be interactive displays based on children's books; children will learn about the story and create a related make-and-take project at each display. The event is free. Caribbean festival: The 10th annual Caribbean Carnival & Mardi Gras Dance, hosted by the African-American Club of Hernando County, will be from 7 to 11 p.m. March 5 at the Senior Citizen Center, 7925 Rhanbuoy Road, Spring Hill.

Tickets are $25, with proceeds benefiting the club's scholarship fund. The event will feature steel band Caribbean music by Dickie and Melvin, a parade, a limbo contest and prizes. Guests will receive a steel pan welcome. Irving Burgie, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, will attend.

african violet show: The Fantasy African Violet Club will host its 22nd annual African Violets: A Treasure to Behold show and sale March 11 and 12 at the Weeki Wachee Senior Citizen Club, 3357 Susan Drive, Spring Hill.
