Tuition assistance, training are topics

Jennifer Ball of Pasco- Hernando State College will discuss the Florida Trade Grant, which provides tuition assistance and training for the unemployed, incumbent workers and veterans who are interested in careers in advanced manufacturing.

The free program will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive.

Center needs various types of blood

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is facing a critical shortage of type O-negative blood, along with A-negative and B-negative. Since O-negative is the blood type anyone can use in an emergency, it makes the shortage even more serious.

Free gun safety locks available to families

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office has teamed up with Project ChildSafe to provide free gun safety locks to Hernando County gun owners.

Project ChildSafe is a nonprofit charitable organization committed to promoting firearm safety among owners through the distribution of safety education messages and free firearm safety kits.

The kits include a cable-style gun-locking device and a brochure that discusses safe handling and secure storage.

The locks are available while supplies last at the Sheriff's Office, 18900 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, and at the District 2 office, at 7499 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. There is a limit of one safety lock per household, and the locks must be picked up by an adult member of the household.

Meet those who fly model aircraft at show

The Hernando Aero Modelers will have their annual Ham Fun Fly at 8:30 a.m. June 20 at the club's field at the Cemex entrance road, 16301 Ponce de Leon Blvd., north of Brooksville.

Gates open at 7 a.m. Visitors will see a variety of flying machines and can meet the owners who build and fly the models. There will be demonstrations and contests. A trophy will be presented for the most points. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The landing fee is $5; parking is $3 per person or $5 per carload. The rain date is June 21. For information, call Tony White, (937) 570-7892.

Amateur radio group puts skills to the test

The Hernando County Amateur Radio Association will present its annual Field Day from 2 p.m. June 27 until 2 p.m. June 28 at Linda Pedersen Park at Jenkins Creek, 6300 Shoal Line Blvd.

The 24-hour period provides an opportunity for the public to watch as association members test their capability to be prepared to help in any communication emergency.

During the exercise, several stations will work together, powered by emergency generators or batteries. Members will provide information and answer questions. In addition, the "Get on the Air" station will be operating so visitors can participate in making contacts with other stations.

Farewell receptions set for PHSC president

Pasco-Hernando State College invites community members to join faculty, staff and students in offering best wishes to president Katherine Johnson at receptions to be hosted at each of its five campuses.

During Johnson's tenure, which began in 2005, the college added two campuses, introduced several new programs, transitioned to a state college offering baccalaureate degrees, and now contributes an estimated $240 million annually to the regional economy.

It's fireworks show, demolition derby time

Sponsors, donations and vendors are needed for the Firecracker Smash'm Up Fireworks Show and Demolition Derby at 4 p.m. July 4 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 Broad St., Brooksville.

The event, being put on by the Hernando County Fair Association, will include food, music, contests, games and other activities.

Cardiovascular imaging is topic

Oak Hill Hospital will present "Advances in Cardiovascular Imaging," part of its For Your Health community education series, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane, south of Brooksville.

Presented by Dr. Gaurav Mathur, board certified in cardiology, internal medicine and nuclear cardiology, the event is free; a complimentary hot meal will be served.
