BROOKSVILLE

Relay for Life is last weekend in April

The 2016 American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Spring Hill will be from 6 p.m. April 29 to 11 a.m. April 30 at Nature Coast Technical High School, south of Brooksville.

An opening ceremony and a celebratory cancer survivors lap will kick off the event. A luminaria ceremony, where candles are lit in honor and memory of those who have battled cancer, will begin at 9 p.m. April 29. Teams of walkers will come together for the all-night walk to raise money for the cancer society. Activities and entertainment are planned throughout the event. BROOKSVILLE

County Building Division closed Friday

The Hernando County Building Division, 789 Providence Blvd., will be closed from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday so technology maintenance can be completed. Regular office hours will resume Monday.

SPRING HILL

Philippine-Americans plan Easter festivities

The Hernando County Philippine-American Association invites the public to its annual Easter celebration from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 27 at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd.

The event will include an Easter egg hunt, games and a potluck luncheon. Guests staying for the luncheon should bring a dish to share. The association will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and water. The group's general election will also be held.

Regine Dossche to lead art workshop

The Spring Hill Art League will host an art workshop by Regine Dossche from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 26 at the Weeki Wachee Senior Citizen Club, 3357 Susan Drive in Weeki Wachee Acres.

Rain barrel workshop sponsored by county

Residents are invited to attend a rain barrel workshop at 10:30 a.m. April 20 at the Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive.

The workshop will be presented by Lilly Browning, Florida-Friendly Landscaping program coordinator. Those wishing to attend must preregister and send the payment of $68 to: Hernando County Utilities Department, 21030 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34601, by April 16 and write "rain barrel workshop April 20" on the envelope.

Utilities Department customers who attend and install a rain barrel at their home will receive a one-time credit of $25 on their water bill. Bring a vehicle that can accommodate a 55-gallon barrel. For information, call (352) 540-6230.

Spring Fling Tea Party a fundraiser for clinic

Tickets are available for Crescent Community Clinic's annual Spring Fling Tea Party from 1 to 4 p.m. April 30 at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive.

Sheriff's Office needs Spring Hill traffic aides

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is looking for volunteers living in the Spring Hill area who are interested in volunteering for the Sheriff's Traffic Aides program.

The program's primary mission is to provide traffic control at accident scenes or in the vicinity of structure fires. When needed, the aides may also support emergency operations, such as when wires are down or a traffic signal malfunctions.

Previous traffic control experience is not required. Aides receive specialized training and equipment. Uniform shirts, caps and vests are provided. The aides must pass a background check, including fingerprints.

AARP driver safety classes for April

AARP Driver Safety Program classes are available. The cost for each six-hour course is $15 for AARP members (bring membership card) and $20 for nonmembers. These classes are scheduled in April:

Guardian ad Litem needs volunteers

The Guardian ad Litem program is in need of volunteers to be advocates for abused, neglected or abandoned children whose cases are in the court system.

The trained volunteers are appointed by the court to advocate on behalf of children. Volunteers become familiar with a child's care and make recommendations to help ensure a safe, stable and permanent environment for the child.
