BROOKSVILLE

Second stage of road project under way

Phase 2 of construction on Lake Lindsey Road has begun. A portion of the road between Jacobs Way and Old Crystal River Road will be closed to through traffic until April 15, weather permitting. Traffic will be detoured to Old Crystal River Road, Yontz Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

Phase 2 of construction includes widening the road, replacing a large culvert and replacing end walls on each side of the road. For information, call (352) 540-6570.

Sons of Italy to award pair of scholarships

Sons of Italy, Nature Coast Lodge 2502 will award two $1,000 scholarships to Hernando County high school graduates of Italian descent with a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and a minimum SAT total score of 1,100, or an ACT composite score of 23, along with a 750 word essay.

The application deadline is Monday. Application forms are available in all Hernando County high school guidance offices. Scholarship winners and their immediate families will be invited and recognized at the lodge's dinner meeting at 5:30 p.m. April 23 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 1107 Commercial Way, Spring Hill. Hernando committees need resident volunteers

The County Commission is accepting applications from individuals who want to serve on the following Hernando County citizen committees. Applicants must be residents of and registered voters in Hernando County. These are voluntary, nonpaid positions and may be an alternate member position.

On the board of construction and regulation, positions are available for a building contractor and an architect/engineer.

On the fine arts council, five positions are available. On the library advisory committee, one position is available.

AARP driver's safety classes set in April

AARP Driver Safety Program classes are available at various locations

The cost for each six-hour course is $15 for AARP members (bring membership card) and $20 for nonmembers. These classes are scheduled in April:

Group sponsors evening of Easter egg hunting

A Hop n' Glow Egg Hunt and Easter Celebration, presented by the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce's Young Professionals Group, will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. April 4 at Anderson Snow Park, 1360 Anderson Snow Road, Spring Hill.

The family-friendly event includes a visit from the Easter Bunny, games, activities and unique photos. There will be six age-defined "twilight hour" egg hunts, a glow-in-the-dark dance floor with DJ John, along with local merchants and restaurant vendors.

Jazz Society band helps Springstead fundraiser

An Evening of Music and the Arts featuring the Hernando Jazz Society's 17-piece All Star Swing Band will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 17, at the Springstead Theatre, 3300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

The event includes a student art auction during intermission. Artwork will be available for viewing from 6 to 7 p.m. The concert and auction will benefit Springstead High School's guidance department's student support programs.

Blessing of the Fleet scheduled at yacht club

Hernando Beach Yacht Club's annual Blessing of the Fleet will begin at 3 p.m. April 18 at the club, 4163 Shoal Line Blvd., Hernando Beach.

The fleet blessing and laying of the wreath at Marker 86 honoring sailors lost at sea, will follow the ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. Boat owners should arrive at the yacht club dock (Snapper #1 Canal behind the yacht club) before 3 p.m.

Food Truck Fiesta With a Beat set for April 17

The Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Weeki Wachee High School and Cajun in a Truck will host the Hernando County Food Truck Fiesta with a Beat from 5 to 9 p.m. April 17 at Weeki Wachee High School, 12150 Vespa Way, Weeki Wachee.

The annual event, which is free and open to the public, will feature more than a dozen top-ranked gourmet food trucks, games, activities and surprises. Guests include the Spring Hill Power Rangers, Elsa and her Princesses, Ironman, Captain America, Spiderman and other surprise guests. Kenn "E" Grube will perform as Elvis.

Local high school bands and choral groups, along with Central High School's ROTC unit will perform. Bring a lawn chair. For information, call the chamber at (352) 796-0697.

Overnight bus trip shares Tallahassee's black history

Learn more about Florida history on the Connecting the Dots Black Heritage Tour. The chartered bus ride to Tallahassee will be May 17 to 21.

The bus will depart at 10 a.m. May 17 from the parking lot of Winn Dixie, 6270 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee, and return at approximately 1 p.m. May 21.

Registration fee is $35 and includes four meals and tours. Tours include: Tallahassee Museum, FAMU Black Archives, Landmarks & Legacy Tour, Cascades Park, Historic Frenchtown, Bradfordville Blues Club and the Knott House Museum.

For an additional $50, attend the fifth annual Emancipation and Abolitionist Ball. Ticket includes dinner, and formal Civil War-era wear is encouraged.

Participants need to make their own hotel room reservations under Florida Network Block at the Wyndham Garden Tallahassee Capitol (formerly Ramada Inn) on Apalachee Parkway. Rooms are $79 per night/double occupancy. Call (850) 877-3171.

Register for run: Registration for the ninth annual Spring Lake 5K Run and 2-mile fun run/walk is now open. Runners and sponsors are needed for the May 23 event at the Arc Nature Coast campus, 5283 Neff Lake Road, Brooksville.

The course will take runners over a variety of terrains, including asphalt to a nature trail through the woods, a horse barn and up and down some challenging hills. Registration begins at 7 a.m., race starts at 8 a.m. Prizes awarded for first, second and third place in various age groups. A food fest follows the race. Entry fees are $25 for the 5K, $20 for the fun run/walk. T-shirts are guaranteed to those who register by May 15. All proceeds benefit the Arc Nature Coast, a nonprofit organization that provides support and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in Hernando and surrounding counties.

Seniors sought for volunteer roles: The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers.

Volunteers tutor elementary and high school students, mentor children in the arts, teach life-skills classes to young parents, tutor adult education students, deliver meals to the home-bound, distribute food to the needy, provide transportation for the blind and visually impaired, provide respite care for those with Alzheimer's, supervise court-ordered visitation, prepare tax returns, work in thrift stores, support veterans and military families, and participate in the environmental stewardship program.
