Hernando County news in brief: Local authors to be featured at annual showcase

Local authors to be featured at annual Showcase: The Hernando County Public Library System will host its second annual Local Authors Showcase from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Spring Hill Community Center/Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave., Spring Hill. The event will feature local published authors who have written books on a variety of subjects. Meet the authors, purchase new books, have your books signed and hear readings from some of the authors. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hernando County. Childbirth education course offered by Department of Health: Hernando County's Healthy Start program offers childbirth education throughout the year. The course is designed for women 25 to 35 weeks into pregnancy, as well as their labor and delivery support person. The certified facilitator is Virginia Arnold. The 12-hour course is a series of four classes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the first through fourth Tuesdays of most months. Classes rotate between health department locations: 300 S Main St., Brooksville, and 7551 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. The cost is $60. There is no charge for Healthy Start or WIC clients. Registration is limited to 10 participants (and their support person) per class.

Public libraries offer free programs and classes: The Hernando County Public Library System is offering several free programs and classes:

• Finding Your Balance, from 3:30 to 4:40 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch, 6335 Blackbird Ave., Spring Hill. Each meeting will focus on a different area or topic, but all will relate to finding ways to increase wellness and peace of mind.

• Recycle Tuesday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Spring Hill/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Branch, 9220 Spring Hill Drive. Bring the entire family and learn how to go green by reusing and repurposing discarded items into useful creations and works of art.

• Local Affairs Forum, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, East Hernando Branch, 6457 Windmere Road, Ridge Manor West.

• Lego Club, 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Spring Hill/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Branch.

• Paracord Bracelet Crafts, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Spring Hill/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Branch.

• Bedtime Stories, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, West Hernando/S.T. Foggia Branch.

• Tech Tutoring, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 23, East Hernando Branch.

• Making Movies, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 24, East Hernando Branch.

Circus coming to Anderson Snow Park: The Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department will host the Indoor and Big Top Circus, presented by Walker International Events, at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28 at Anderson Snow Park, 1360 Anderson Snow Road, Spring Hill.

The 2015 rendition will feature acrobats, aerialists, comedy and animal performances. Advance tickets are $12 for adults; $15 the day of the shows. Children under 14 are free. Tickets are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the recreation office, 205 E Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave., Spring Hill. Free children's tickets can also be found at local businesses or online at walkerinternationalevents.com.
