Reading festival has something for children

The annual Hernando County Reading Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Nature Coast Technical High School, 4057 California St., south of Brooksville. Goody bags will be given to the first 300 children. Visitors can meet children's authors, including 11-year-old Madeline Joan Wilks, author of Yellow Dot, Red Dot; Nancy Stewart, author of Bella Saves the Beach; and Shirley Temple Mitten, author of Braile's Tales. Entertainment will include Jiggleman, John Storm's World of Reptiles and others. There will be balloons, food, games and door prizes. For information, call (352) 797-7018.

Essay, poster contest honors black history

The Black Educators Caucus will host a black history essay and poster contest at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 600 Wood Drive. The theme is "African-American Authors." Hernando County students may participate; the registration deadline is Thursday. Details are available in school guidance offices or by calling Bonnie Inmon at (352) 442-8100.

Irish performers to take the stage

A concert featuring Cahal Dunne and George Casey will wrap up the Hernando Performing Arts Guild's 2012-13 season at 7 p.m. March 9 at the Hernando High School Performing Arts Center, 700 Bell Ave. Dunne, known as Ireland's "Happy Man," is not only a singer, but also a composer, pianist, comedian, storyteller and television personality. Casey, also from Ireland, has been entertaining audiences with his comedy for more than 30 years, opening for stars such as Rosemary Clooney, Three Dog Night and the Osmond Brothers.
