Hillsborough High teen expected to recover after wreck that killed her mother

TAMPA -- Maria Liliana Carrillo is in stable condition, and doctors expect a full recovery, the family's lawyer said Sunday.

The 17-year-old Hillsborough High School senior was injured in a Miami car crash that took the life of her mother, Maria Esther Carrillo, a leader in the Tampa Hispanic community.

The family released a statement through its lawyer, Gilberto E. Sanchez, thanking Tampa Bay area residents for their concern and asking for continued prayers as Maria Liliana Carrillo recuperates.

Sanchez wrote that the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, people consider donating to "Maria Esther's heart and soul," TICH, Taller Inter-Cultural Hispano-Americano, a cultural school aimed at teaching Hispanic and non-Hispanic youth about cultural history and Spanish language.

Donations can be made out to TICH Inc., and mailed to 16403 Lake Heather Drive, Tampa, FL 33618.Maria Esther Carrillo's memorial service will be held in Tampa. A date has not been set.
