Student honors: Two Middleton High School students were recognized by the National Center for Women and Informational Technology. Alicia Bishop, engineering magnet junior, and Jeanelle Baldwin, biomedical-biotechnology magnet sophomore, were among the 25 students recognized in Daytona Beach earlier this month as NCWIT North Central Florida Affiliate award winners. Bishop was also one of 35 students to win the 2013 National NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.

Creative competition: The St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School fifth-grade division one team took second place at the state Odyssey of the Mind competition in Orlando earlier this month. It will go on to compete in the world competition at Michigan State University in May. The team was also one of four teams to win the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award. Members of the team were: Abby Burden, Trey Carlson, Mackey Jones, Greta Schmitzer, Jake Spencer, Joseph Strickland and Aidan Willett. Parent Adam Burden and science teacher Mychael Fenlon were the coaches, and student Reid Ballard was the assistant coach.

Volunteer award: Jesuit High School junior Zack Aldridge received a 2013 YEA! Youth Excellence and Achievement Award for volunteer or community service. He has volunteered for more than 640 hours at Metropolitan Ministries, including 325 in his sophomore year. He is also a member of the Jesuit wrestling team and performed in this year's Jesuit Masque's live theatrical production of Beetlejuice.

Teacher award: Kelley Beall, DRT for Elementary Education, won a PBS 2012 Teacher Innovator Award. She is one of 30 educators from across the country to receive the award.

Golf tournament: The Lake Magdalene Elementary Dads' Club is seeking corporate sponsors for its 22nd annual golf tournament fundraiser May 4 at the Babe Zaharias Golf Course. Information on sponsorship packages is available online at LMEdadsclubgolf.com. The group is also seeking donations of goods or services for the goodie bags, after-golf raffle and silent auction. Proceeds from the tournament will help secure a technology matching grant for the school and Operation Helping Hand. Italian festival: Students from Jesuit High School participated in the 16th Festa Italiana at Centennial Park in Ybor City earlier this month. The festival included a Mass at the Italian Club. Senior Max Chillura, freshmen Justin Sosa, Michael Sandborn, JJ Niekro and Michael Lee, and sophomores Guill Gomez, Alejandro Cartaya and Drew Obeck served as ushers. Jesuit's Father Patrick Hough and school president Father Richard Hermes concelebrated the mass with Monsignor Laurence Higgins.

Guest speaker: Roberto Portales, a 2007 Jesuit High School graduate and West Point graduate who recently served in Afghanistan, spoke to Jesuit students last week. Portales deployed to Afghanistan in May 2012, where he served as platoon leader for a multifunctional intelligence team. He returned from his tour of duty in February and now leads his platoon in Washington. While a student at Jesuit, he was an altar server, a member of the National Honor Society and a two-year football letter winner.

Author visit: Herman Parish, author of the Amelia Bedelia book series visited students in grades K-4 at the Academy of the Holy Names earlier this month. Parish spoke to students about his aunt, Peggy Parish, the original author of the series about the maid who misunderstands requests from her employer by taking idioms as literal tasks. Parish told the students about how his aunt came up with the idea for the book series.

School dance: Deer Park Elementary recently held its second annual Mother Son Be Bop Sock Hop, to celebrate mothers and sons, and complement the school's existing Daddy Daughter Dance. The sock hop featured an appearance from Elvis, the Twist Off, the Mother-Son Dance Contest, a Hula Hoop contest and an old-fashioned photo booth.
