Hometown North Pinellas

Morton Plant Hospital departments move in to Doyle Tower: Community members recently toured Doyle Tower, a new 200,000-square-foot four-story patient and surgical building featuring private rooms, a new surgical center, women's services and an orthopedic center at Morton Plant Hospital. The new tower is named in honor of Roz Doyle for her support of the hospital's commitment to improving the health of the community. All patient floors have been developed with a continuous platform design to enhance efficiency and streamline processes. On the surgical floor, an intraoperative MRI has been added and allows for patients to be scanned during surgery, giving surgeons the opportunity to visualize surgical results during an operation which can provide improved results. Built-in robotic equipment also creates surgical suites dedicated solely to minimally invasive robotic surgery. The project architect is Gresham, Smith and Partners in Tampa and the contractor is JE Dunn Construction in Atlanta. It cost $200 million. Hospital departments are expected to move in to the new building on a rotating schedule through the month.

Basic training graduates have Pinellas ties: U.S. Air Force Airman Angelo J. Russo and National Guard Airman 1st Class Dionel Gonzalez Gerena graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The airmen completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Gerena earned an associates degree in 2011 from National Aviation Academy in Clearwater. Russo is the son of Anthony Russo of Largo and Amy Peterson of Safety Harbor. He is a 2016 graduate of Countryside High School in Clearwater.
