Junior League event focuses on human trafficking prevention

The Junior League of Tampa will host Think Globally, Act Communally beginning with a welcome reception at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday (April 25) at the Tampa Theatre, 711 N Franklin St.

The event will be held to educate the public about the issue of human trafficking.

Rev. Becca Stevens, an author, speaker, priest, social entrepreneur and president of Thistle Farms, the largest social enterprise in the U.S. run by abuse survivors, will be the keynote speaker.

Not only has Stevens dedicated the past twenty years of her life to helping women escape prostitution, addiction and trafficking, but she also provides a place for them to heal.

Thistle Farms includes a two year rent free residential program for abuse survivors who want to overcome addictions and start new lives.

In 2001, Stevens started a body care company to give jobs to survivors.

Today, Thistle Farms is a $2 million social enterprise that employs more than 75 people, two-thirds of whom are graduates of the residential program.

The products are sold at more than 400 stores worldwide.

A Thistle Farms participant, full of hope, humor, humility, and honesty, will share her story as well.

Another, more permanent way to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking will be the unveiling of a large outdoor mural at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday (April 25) at Cass and Morgan Streets.

The mural will state: "I am not for sale. I am priceless," and will be located near the Greyhound Bus station. Airports, ports and terminals also serve as points of entry for trafficking victims.

Stevens as well as Mayor Bob Buckhorn will attend the mural reveal.

The event is free and the main program starts at 7:30 p.m.
