King of Kings' fundraiser for Alex is Saturday

A fundraiser for 7-year-old Alex Gualemi, the Port Richey boy with inoperable brain cancer, will be held Saturday at King of Kings Lutheran Church. Alex was featured in a recent Pasco Times article when the church paid to bring a snow-making machine to his home. One of his wishes was to see snow. The Saturday event, which runs from noon until 4 p.m., will feature a silent auction, craft show, face painting and games for children, music and a lunch by Ron's Bar-B-Q. Tickets for the lunch are $8. The church is at 10337 U.S. 19 in Port Richey. Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling (727) 868-5744. King of Kings has also set up an account for Alex and his family with SunTrust Bank. The account is in the name of King of Kings Lutheran Church, Alex's Angels.

Ex-football star gets probation

Former Pasco High School football star and NFL player Darren Hambrick was sentenced to 18 months of probation Thursday after pleading guilty to one count of misdemeanor assault and another count of misdemeanor battery. Hambrick, 33, of Lacoochee was accused in April of assaulting his girlfriend and preventing kids in the house from calling 911. The girlfriend told sheriff's deputies that he pulled her hair and hit her and scratched her with a lamp. Hambrick said she pointed a gun at him. The Hambrick brothers — Darren and Troy — led Pasco to a state championship in 1992. Both of them went on to play in the NFL. Darren Hambrick's last season was in 2002 with the Cleveland Browns. Troy Hambrick was sentenced earlier this year to five years in federal prison for selling crack cocaine.

Pasco County Fire Rescue responded to two mobile home fires Wednesday night and Thursday morning. A fire on Peaceful Lane is believed to have started in the kitchen, while the blaze on Kimball Court was traced to a space heater connected to an extension cord, officials said. No one was injured, but two men, one from each home, are now displaced. One is receiving help from the Red Cross.
