Largo's Shop with a Cop/Firefighter helps 26 families

The city of Largo announced the success of its fifth annual Shop with a Cop/Firefighter, which took place Dec. 11. Off-duty members of the Largo police and fire departments helped 26 struggling Largo families on a holiday shopping spree at the Missouri Avenue Walmart. More than $6,500 was raised this year, with major contributions coming from both Largo Walmart stores and Turkey Trot organizers.

Kelsey Fredrickson of Gulfport was named Pinellas County's Distinguished Young Woman and will compete for the state title in the Florida's Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program Jan. 23. She was selected based on her academic record, volunteerism and talent. Fredrickson is a senior at St. Petersburg High School.

Ric Carvalis of St. Petersburg has been awarded Outstanding Governor for the Optimist in the year ending Sept. 30, the highest honor obtainable from the North Florida District of Optimist International. He is also a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club, the Downtown Optimist Club and the Sunset Optimist Club.
