Man charged with beating woman in New Port Richey

Woman beaten with fists, hammer

A 31-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning on accusations he beat a woman with his fists and a hammer because she wouldn't give him money to buy drugs. The man punched the woman about 15 times in the head and upper body and hit her twice with a hammer before running off, New Port Richey police reported. Officers were called out shortly after midnight and the woman gave them a description of the man. Police found Benjamin Hunter walking northbound on Rowan Road, just south of Massachusetts Avenue. Hunter told officers he had asked the woman for drug money, but denied doing anything violent. He was charged with domestic aggravated battery and remains at the Land O'Lakes jail without bail.
