Memorial service to honor slain police officers

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has invited the public to attend the 2015 Pasco Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service, which the Sheriff's Office will host at 10 a.m. Friday on the north lawn of the Historic Courthouse, 37918 Meridian Ave.

The keynote speaker will be Tarpon Springs police Chief Robert Kochen. Tarpon Springs lost Officer Charles Kondek on Dec. 14.

The memorial will honor eight officers who were killed in the line of duty in Pasco County between 1909, when Deputy Shelly Nicks died, and 2011, when Hernando County Deputy John Mecklenburg was killed in Pasco County while pursuing a suspect on U.S. 41.

Multiple federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are scheduled to participate in the service.

Nonprofits taking part in online giving event

At least two Pasco County nonprofit organizations will participate in Give Day Tampa Bay, a 24-hour online giving challenge Tuesday at givedaytampabay.org.

The Pay It Forward Farm, which assists struggling single moms, will use Give Day donations to help turn a house on its property into the PIFF Community Center for computer training, personal and professional development classes and a child care area.

The Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation of Florida, which aims to "enhance individual potential and quality of life through improved hearing," according to its mission statement, also will receive Give Day donations.

Enter photos in libraries' contest

As part of National Library Week, the Pasco County Library System has kicked off a contest called "Creative@YourLibrary." Until May 12, Pasco residents who are 13 years and older are encouraged to submit photos of themselves having fun and being creative in libraries.

Photos must be submitted via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #PascoLibraries. Three entrants, to be drawn at random, will win $50 gift cards to a store of their choice. The entrant with the most Facebook likes, Instagram likes and Twitter favorites combined will win a $100 gift card.

Library book sale runs through weekend

Charter meeting set for May 11

The initial meeting of the Pasco County Charter Government Advisory Committee has been set for 2:30 p.m. May 11 in Building 3 at the Pasco School Board's district office, 7205 Land O' Lakes Blvd.

The public is welcome to attend all committee meetings, during which the committee will make recommendations on to whether to support developing a charter government in Pasco County.

The county has set up a website so residents can be informed about the committee and its duties.

Arts classes offered for kids, adults

The Pasco Fine Arts Council has announced two new classes.

The first, for children, is called "Make It Pop!" and will be held Saturday and May 16 at the Land O'Lakes Recreation Complex, 3022 Collier Blvd.

Students will create artwork inspired by pop artists. A session for students ages 8 to 12 will be from 10 a.m. to noon, and another for students ages 13 to 15 will be from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost is $54 for members and $74 for non-members. The second class, a beginners workshop for adults, is called "Painted Furniture Techniques." It will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Land O'Lakes Recreation Complex, 3022 Collier Blvd. The cost is $45 for members and $55 for non-members. All materials will be provided. Pancake breakfast Saturday morning

The Volunteer Way will host a pancake breakfast for needy families and the homeless from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Regency Park Civic Center, 10240 Regency Park Blvd.

Drumming class for kids starts May 12

The Prodigy program from Saint Leo University will present a snare and bongo drums class for children ages 7 to 9 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting May 12 at the Salvation Army, 7745 Ridge Road.

Skin cancer tests to be given Monday

In recognition of Melanoma Monday, the first Monday in May, CARES will provide skin cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday at CARES Claude Pepper, 6640 Van Buren St.

CARES Elfers Center needs volunteers

Volunteers are being sought by the CARES Elfers Center at 4136 Barker Drive. Positions include kitchen volunteers and servers; experienced instructors in computers, e-readers and smartphones, and people who could lead groups in crafts, cards and board games. Attorneys to give free consultation sessions

The West Pasco Bar Association will offer free 30-minute consultations by appointment between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday at the following CARES locations:

PLAY KICKBALL: Pasco Kids First and New Port Richey City Council member Chopper Davis will host the second annual Middle School Kickball Returns Kickball Tournament, presented by Faux Iron Studios, on May 9.

The tournament is open to adults and children and will take place at Schwettman Education Center at 5520 Grand Blvd. and at Gulf High School, 5355 School Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The playoff and championship games will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Schwettman. Teams must consist of 10 to 12 players with a minimum of four females. The fee is $120 and teams are guaranteed a minimum of two games. An award also will be presented to the squad with "Best Team Spirit," provided by the Trinity Rotary. Additional sponsorship and signage opportunities are available. All proceeds will benefit Doug Saxon's run for honorary governor of west Pasco and to support his charity of choice, Pasco Kids First, and the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

Golf tournament: The Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce will host its 29th annual golf tournament on May 15 at the Heritage Harbor Golf and Country Club, 19502 Heritage Harbor Parkway, Lutz. Registration will start at noon; the tournament will start at 1 p.m. with a shotgun scramble. Registration includes greens fees, golf cart, range balls and a barbecue awards dinner, plus opportunities for amateurs to win $10,000 or a two-year lease on a 2015 Mustang. The cost is $70 per person or $260 for a team of four. Tickets for a networking opportunity at the barbecue are $15.
