Mentors needed for children in foster services

Gulf Coast Community Care needs volunteers age 30 and older for its mentoring program. Many of the children are in foster care or live with a single parent who is going to school and working. Volunteers give the gift of time to one child and are provided social activities and receive support by agency staff. No experience is necessary and there are no costs. Volunteers spend a few hours a month in simple activities such as reading, fishing, baking, teaching a craft or visiting a park with a child. Employers sought in veterans job fair

Abilities of Florida, part of the ServiceSource Network, Veterans Employment Outreach Program, is seeking qualified employers for a job fair noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at Minnreg Hall, 6340 126th Ave. N, Largo. The job fair will have special emphasis on employment opportunities for veterans with disabilities and is also open to the public. Abilities of Florida has been instrumental in making employment connections for scores of disabled veterans and people with disabilities. "Our emphasis is to find jobs for disabled veterans," said Muriel Boysen, director of the Veterans Employment Outreach Program. "We are specifically targeting veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, but we will certainly assist all disabled veterans." Call (727) 538-7370, ext. 336.

Clearwater

Computer courses offered for seniors

Senior Citizens Services, 1204 Rogers St., Clearwater, offers basic computer courses, including "Introduction to Computers," "Beginning E-Mail" and "Introduction to the Internet" to seniors at greatly reduced rates. Palm harbor

Library to forgive overdue fees

The Palm Harbor Library will have a two-week amnesty period starting Monday and running through Sept. 4, during which overdue items can be returned without a charge. This applies only to Palm Harbor Library materials that are returned directly to the Palm Harbor Library, 2330 Nebraska Ave. The amnesty program will set the stage for the library to start working with a collection agency, Unique Management Services, on Sept. 7 to encourage patrons to return long overdue items. The cost of the collection service will be passed on only to those patrons whose accounts are affected. Under the present system, the library notifies members materials are overdue and gives them ample time to respond. For more information, call (727) 784-3332, ext. 3002.
