Mother faces child neglect, DUI charges

A 29-year-old Wesley Chapel woman who authorities say drove her two young children around while on prescription drugs was charged with child neglect and DUI on Friday, according to a report from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. About 2 a.m., a citizen reported a possible drunken driver in a red Plymouth van who was driving erratically on U.S. 41. A woman was spotted in the median of Gator Lane with the engine running, the report said. A deputy saw two children in the vehicle — a 6-year-old girl and a 23-month-old boy — who were not restrained. The driver, Kristin Marie Smith, had her head down and her speech was slurred, the report said. She told the deputy she had taken various prescription drugs, including Xanax. After failing sobriety tests, the deputy learned Smith's driver's license was suspended, and that she had to two warrants in Pasco for license-related offenses. The deputy also found marijuana in the vehicle. Smith, of 6239 Candlewood Drive, is being held in lieu of $6,063 bail at the Land O'Lakes jail for the DUI and child neglect charges and prior traffic offenses related to the warrant.
