Letter carriers' food drive set for Saturday

The National Association of Letter Carriers will help "Stamp Out Hunger" across America with its 20th annual food drive Saturday. Residents are encouraged to participate by leaving a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal and even pet food next to their mailboxes prior to the time of regular Saturday mail delivery. The nation's 210,000 letter carriers will collect the donations as they deliver the mail and take them to a local Feeding America food bank or hunger-relief organization in more than 10,000 communities. Locally, the RCS Food Bank at 700 Druid Road in Clearwater expects to receive 100,000 pounds of food and needs volunteers to help with sorting. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. Volunteer shifts on Saturday are 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., 3 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. To volunteer, contact Deb Gatley at (727) 584-3528, ext. 407, or email deb.gatley@RCSpinellas.org.

New high set in bus ridership

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority carried more passengers in April than in any previous April since it was founded in 1984. Early figures for April indicate that 1,174,541 rides were taken last month, which is a jump of nearly 50,000 rides over April 2011. "This is the fifth month in a row that we've set ridership records," said PSTA CEO Brad Miller. "It just goes to show that people in Pinellas County really want to use public transit." PSTA leaders say the increased ridership, along with a big upswing in bus advertising sales, have helped put the agency approximately $670,000 under budget for 2012. To learn how to plan a trip and ride PSTA, visit www.PSTA.net or call the PSTA InfoLine at (727) 540-1900.
