Fatal crash near SR 54, Little Road

A 46-year-old New Port Richey man was killed Wednesday morning when the pickup truck he was driving collided head-on with a car on State Road 54 west of Little Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Jon Kelly Swoager died at Community Hospital shortly after the 9 a.m. accident, the FHP said. It was raining hard when a car, described by troopers only as a hatchback, drove east on SR 54 in the center lane. It suddenly changed lanes and cut off a 2010 Nissan Sentra headed east in the inside lane. James Profita, 61, of Tampa, attempted to avoid crashing into the hatchback and lost control of the Nissan, which rotated sideways, according to the FHP report. The Nissan crossed the median and into the westbound lane where it collided with Swoager's 1986 Chevy Scottsdale pickup. Profita was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. The hatchback left the scene, heading east on SR 54.

A second slice of Panera Bread

Panera Bread, the fast-casual chain with the motto "a loaf of bread in every arm," is opening a store on U.S. 19 in front of Gulf View Square mall. Crews recently began moving earth and blasting asphalt, but so far no building permits have been issued for the site, county officials said. Panera Bread is expanding across North America, operating 1,493 company-owned and franchise-operated bakery-cafes in 40 states and in Ontario as of June 28 under the Panera Bread, Saint Louis Bread Co. and Paradise Bakery & Café names, according to the company's website. Among its menu items are sandwiches, soups, salads, muffins and bagels. The Port Richey site would be Pasco's second Panera Bread. The company already operates a store on State Road 54 at Little Road near Trinity. A store in New Tampa serves residents of Wesley Chapel, while Northdale and Carrollwood locations are close to residents of Land O'Lakes.
