Since the founding of the GFWC North Pinellas Woman's Club in 2003, eight members have been diagnosed with breast cancer. These survivors have created 2,000 comfort pillows for men and women who have had breast cancer surgery.
The small, soft, washable pillows can be placed between the body and arm to relieve discomfort and can also be used in the car to ease pressure of the seatbelt shoulder strap, or while sleeping. The comfort pillows are placed in cancer centers, doctors' offices and the club will even mail a pillow to someone when contacted. These volunteer women have also participated in walks that benefit breast cancer awareness programs.
The club will have its second American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer benefit from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Dunedin Country Club, 1050 Palm Blvd. Featured will be dinner, dancing, entertainment by acclaimed singer and entertainer Dominic and over 50 opportunity baskets. Tickets are $30 per person. For reservations call event chair Aphrodite Smith-Gillespie at (727) 799-7966 or Fran Falkenhayn at (727) 278-9106.
