North Tampa events: river cleanup

Volunteers needed: Help preserve a picturesque environment by joining the 11th annual River & Trails Cleanup in Temple Terrace on Saturday. City parks and recreation employees and volunteers will gather at Rotary Park, 8000 E Fowler Ave. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the cleanup runs 9 a.m. to noon, focusing mostly on the river itself, said parks planner Dana Carver. That means volunteers should bring their own watercraft, such as canoes, kayaks or other boats.

Those without a boat can help preserve the natural beauty of Temple Terrace by removing unsightly litter and non-native plants along the river banks. Volunteers under age 18 are welcome to participate, but must have a Volunteer Waiver Form signed by a parent or guardian. Students volunteering for school credit can have their school volunteer log sheet signed at the event for the hours they work.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, bottled water and a hat. Garbage bags, small snacks and some bottled water will be provided. To register, or for more information, call (813) 506-6600 or stop by the Family Recreation Complex at 6610 E Whiteway Drive, Temple Terrace.
