Weird talk: Jeff and Ann VanderMeer, who recently published the critically acclaimed anthology, The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories and Best American Fantasy, will give a public reading at 6 p.m. Tuesday in MSC 2709 on the University of South Florida campus. A reception and book signing will follow. On Wednesday at 1 p.m., they will be joined in MSC 2709 by anthropology and women's and gender studies professors to discuss various forms of sci-fi media and how they address issues of gender and otherness. World Fantasy Award winner Jeff VanderMeer's fiction has been published in more than 20 countries, and he recently signed a three-book agreement with Farrar, Straus & Giroux (New York). Junot Diaz described his last collection, The Third Bear, as "cunningly crafted stories full of wonder and intelligence, proving again why VanderMeer is so essential." Ann VanderMeer is only the second female editor of the venerable horror magazine, Weird Tales. She is the founder of Buzzcity Press and she and Jeff are currently compiling an anthology on feminist speculative fiction. Women's club: The Lutz-Land O'Lakes Women's Club holds its general meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Land O'Lakes Community Center on Land O'Lakes Boulevard. Hospice volunteers: If you want to make a difference in someone's life, and if you have two to four hours to share each week, then consider volunteering with LifePath Hospice. Potential volunteers can attend a 90-minute orientation session at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at the LifePath Hospice Resource Center, 3010 W Azeele St. Specialty and professional volunteers, such as hair stylists, massage therapists and nail technicians, are in great demand. LifePath Hospice provides free training, and volunteers do not need any previous type of experience. Potential volunteers must preregister.     The murder of a St. Petersburg man will be featured this week on a new true crime series Murder Calls on Investigation Discovery.

    Jose Adame sits in a Pinellas County courtroom during his 2016 trial and conviction for first-degree murder. Adame was convicted of first-degree murder last year for torturing and then executing his boyfriend as he pleaded for his life in 2011.     ST. PETERSBURG — Jesse Nevel, the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement candidate for mayor, on Thursday demanded that he be allowed to participate in a July 25 televised debate between incumbent Mayor Rick Kriseman and challenger Rick Baker.
