Sheriff's office launches WATER safety guide
The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has launched a public safety campaign to keep children safe around pools and waterways. A 90-second public service announcement of helpful tips and a child safety checklist for homeowners are available at pascosheriff.com (click on "Summer Safety Tips"). "Most childhood drowning deaths occur when a parent or caregiver becomes distracted," said Cpl. Michael La Roche. "So if you are boating, always make sure you and your children have life jackets on. Around the pool, don't be distracted by the telephone, doorbell or chores." Sheriff Chris Nocco also appears, encouraging parents to make sure their children learn how to swim. "Giving children the tools to survive in the water is a gift parents can give that will last a lifetime and could save their child's life."

Weatherford endorses Starkey
Incoming House Speaker Will Weatherford on Thursday endorsed Kathryn Starkey's campaign for County Commission. A former School Board member, Starkey is one of five candidates in a Republican primary. The winner faces Democrat Matt Murphy in November. "As a former Pasco County School Board member, she was our conservative voice, and as a county commissioner I know she will continue to fight to keep taxes low and bring jobs to Pasco County," he said in a news release. Starkey has also been endorsed by outgoing District 3 Commissioner Ann Hildebrand. She has held the seat since 1984.
