Pasco health notes: Help offered for working caregivers

CARES East Pasco Adult Day Services offers an alternative for working caregivers or caregivers who need time off for themselves. CARES operates an Adult Day Health Service Center at the CARES Crescent Center, 13906 Fifth St. in Dade City. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and charges are based on the level of care. Financial assistance may be available. CARES offers a program for individuals who are experiencing early memory losses and need a proactive day program to provide social support and memory retraining skills. Sessions are offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday at the CARES Phil Mishkin Administrative Center, 7505 Rottingham Road in Port Richey. An introductory class is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, and there is a six-week commitment required. Call Christine Powers at (727) 862-9291, ext. 244, for reservations or information.

Brown Bag Day at CARES Crescent Center is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 19 at the center at 13906 Fifth Street in Dade City. A CVS pharmacist will be available to evaluate all medications taken by individuals. Many times medications prescribed by different physicians should not be taken together and can cause problems. Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City is introducing an education and exercise rehabilitation program for diabetics called "Living with Diabetes." This program is presented by pharmacists, dietitians, physical therapists and wound care and diabetic educators. A prescription from a physician is required. Also required to get into the program is a commitment to getting control of diabetes. Cost is $50. Call Monica at (352) 521-1138 to register.

CARES Adult Day Services and the Alzheimer's Association-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter are offering an educational series for caregivers or professionals to learn about Alzheimer's disease. There are five sessions that will be held at the CARES Crescent Center, 13906 Fifth St., Dade City. All sessions are from 10 to 11 a.m. The dates and topics are: Alzheimer's Basic Course for Caregivers, Thursday; Communications, June 19; Challenging Behaviors, June 26; Hospice End of Life Issues, July 10; and Community Resources/advocacy, July 17. The Pasco County Tobacco Prevention Program meets from 1 to 2 p.m. every Monday at 10841 Little Road in New Port Richey. This quit-smoking support group, sponsored by the Pasco County Health Department, provides free nicotine patches and the American Lung Association Freedom from Smoking course. The CARES clients at the Claude Pepper Adult Day Care Center have formed a bell ringing group. They will entertain at local nursing homes and are in need of new or used choir or graduation robes. Call (727) 844-3077 to help.

The Florida Cancer Institute will hold its regular breast cancer support group meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at 8763 River Crossing Blvd., New Port Richey. Anyone who has been touched by breast cancer is invited to attend, and family members are encouraged to attend. Reservations are advised by calling (727) 842- 8411, ext. 150. The group meets every other Thursday.

Hospice 101 training will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 6807 Rowan Road, New Port Richey. The training is for adults and teens ages 14 and older who would like to volunteer in nonpatient roles by helping in the team office at the thrift shop or at special events. Those who can knit, crochet or sew items for patients are welcome. Preregistration is required by calling Sheena Thompson at (727) 847-5647.

The Alzheimer's Family Organization will present a Charity Luncheon Fashion Show at noon Monday at the Living Word Church, 5151 Rowan Road in New Port Richey. Hernando-Pasco Hospice will offer a bereavement support group for any grieving adult from 2 to 3 p.m. June 19 at our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 2348 Collier Parkway in Land O'Lakes. A group meets from 2 to 3 p.m. Mondays at Florida Hospital of Zephyrhills, 7050 Gall Blvd., Zephyrhills. Call (813) 780-6797. Another group, for adults, meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays through June 30 at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 7922 State Road 52 in Hudson. The Alzheimer's Family Organization offers four support groups this week. There are two at 6:30 p.m. today. One is at the Summerville Senior Living, 5539 Charles St., New Port Richey. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers several support group meetings for family and friends of those with mental illness and consumers (those with mental illness). This includes all brain disorders, including but not limited to OCD, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia and multiple personalities. Support groups are available for individuals, for children and adolescents, for adults and for family members. Call (727) 992-9653 for times, dates and locations of support groups.
