THE TAMPA BAY BUSINESSES FOR CULTURE AND THE ARTS is accepting applications through Feb. 29 for the 2016 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships Program. The program is open to high school juniors and seniors in Pinellas County. The scholarship is awarded in the fields of instrumental music, vocal music, theatre, dance, visual arts and literary arts, and it can be used for tuition at the college, university or professional arts training program of the student's choice. AARP DRIVER SAFETY COURSE: The Safety Harbor Library and AARP will be offering a refresher course for drivers age 50 and older. Drivers can update their knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. Continued driver education reduces your chances of receiving traffic violations, accident involvement, and may qualify you for an insurance discount. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. SENIOR EXCURSIONS: The St. Pete Beach Community Center's Senior Excursions are back. All excursions depart from the St. Pete Beach Community Center, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive, at 9 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. Participants must register by the Wednesday prior to the excursion. The next excursion will be on Feb. 6 to the Florida State Fair. Each trip is $12 for St. Pete Beach residents and $15 for non residents. Cost covers transportation only. GOODWILL INDUSTRIES-SUNCOAST is hosting a job fair to fill positions at the new Goodwill store being built at 16432 U.S. 19 N, in Clearwater. Goodwill will be hiring for sales and donations processing associates as well as retail management staff. SAFE BOATING CLASSES: The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater is offering the "About Boating Safely" Class on Feb. 13-14. The class will include the topics of boating emergencies, know your boat, getting under way, navigating, operating your boat safely and legal requirements, hypothermia and winter boating. Classes are at 8 a.m. at Morton Plant Hospital Campus, Cheek-Powell Heart and Vascular Pavilion, Second Floor, 455 Pinellas St., Clearwater. Cost for materials is $35. GOODWILL BOOK DRIVE: Goodwill is holding a book drive for its childhood literacy program that begins on Feb. 1. Goodwill-Suncoast is asking people to donate children's books in good condition. Books for preschoolers are needed for Goodwill volunteers who read to groups of children at Head Start centers and other locations. Each child is presented with a personalized book of their own to take home. Books for elementary-age children are also needed. They're distributed to elementary schools that serve low-income families, helping classrooms and libraries. To donate books, attach a note indicating they are "For BookWorks" and drop them off at any Goodwill-Suncoast store or donation site. THE CITY OF SOUTH PASADENA is looking for artists and volunteers for its 30th Annual Artspring Exhibition. The exhibit runs April 1-3 and volunteers are needed for four hour shifts March 28 through April 4. Artists are also needed to exhibit their artwork in the following mediums: clay, fiber, wood, metals, glass, photography, paper or paint. Sculptures may be submitted in clay, wood, metals or glass. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in two categories (artwork and sculpture), along with the Mayor's Award and Honorable Mention ribbons. No entry fee required. CHILDREN'S THEATER CLASSES: The Largo Recreation Department is offering children's theater classes for an upcoming production of Sleeping Beauty. Classes will be from 4 to 5 p.m., for children ages 4 to 6 and for children ages 7 to 14, class time is from 5 to 7 p.m., on Tuesdays. Cost is $100 for residents and $125 for non-residents for children ages 4 to 6 and $200 for residents and $250 for non-residents of children ages 7 to 14. The Largo Community Center is at 400 Alt. ATTENTION ALL WRITERS: Keep St. Pete Lit, a nonprofit that promotes all things literary in St. Petersburg, is taking applications for a new writer's residency. The LitSpace St. Petersburg Writer's Residency will provide one writer with two weeks of housing in St. Petersburg, time they'll spend writing, connecting with local writers, and delivering a reading for the public. Residents will stay in the Craftsman House, a restored historic bungalow in the Grand Central district. The residency is open to creative writers in all genres, including poetry, fiction, drama, and creative nonfiction. Deadline for applications is Sunday and the winner will be announced in mid February and will begin their stay in early April.
