Raccoon in tool shed bites man; rabies feared
A raccoon attacked a man Tuesday at his home on Ballard Street. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said that Benjamin Smith, 33, was removing boxes from a tool shed when he came across the animal inside. Authorities said Smith declined immediate medical attention, but later expressed concern that he might have been exposed to rabies. An Animal Services officer called to the scene was unable to find the raccoon. It was unknown Wednesday whether Smith sought treatment for the bite. However, county Environmental Health Director Al Gray said his department would recommend that Smith seek antirabies treatment as soon as possible.
