Ronald McDonald college scholarships
Ronald McDonald Children's Charities of Tampa Bay, in partnership with the state and the Hernando County Education Foundation, offers college scholarships to students who face limited access to educational and career opportunities.
Applications are available on the Hernando County Education Foundation's website at hernandoeducationfoundation.org, or at the guidance counselor's office at each high school. The deadline to apply is Feb. 10; completed applications must be returned to the guidance counselor's office. No late applications or incomplete applications will be accepted.
Students applying must be U.S. citizens, permanent resident aliens or dependents of a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
Along with the application, students are required to include a personal statement, letter of recommendation from a teacher, workplace or volunteer experience, a signed student scholarship criteria stating that they will remain drug-free and crime-free. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and be eligible for the free/reduced public school lunch program. Students may not be a recipient of a "Take Stock," "Doorways" or similar scholarship program that uses matching funds from the state.
Students must demonstrate a record of school and community service. The value of the scholarship may be equal to 60 credit hours at a Florida state college or university, an approved private nonprofit Florida college or university and an approved out-of-state school of higher education.

Community dance to be held Saturday
A High Point Community Dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the clubhouse, 12249 Clubhouse Road.
Music will be provided by Short Notice. Coffee and ice will be provided; guests can bring their own beverages.

Volunteers sought for lands committee
The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from individuals interested in filling a vacancy on the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Committee. There is a layperson position available. This is a volunteer committee that reviews and makes recommendations to the county commissioners regarding potential sensitive lands acquisition by the county.
Applications are available in the county administrator's office, Room 263, Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St., and online at hernandocounty.us/bocc/committees.htm. Completed applications must be returned to the office no later than 5 p.m. Jan. 21.

Knights of Columbus dinner and dance
The Knights of Columbus, St. Jude Council 6383 will host a 2011 Dinner and Dance Jan. 22 at the KofC Hall, 10470 Spring Hill Drive. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. The dinner will include homemade pierogies, kielbasa, cole slaw, bread, coffee, tea and cake. A cash bar will be available.
