A freshman at Steinbrenner High School took top honors for a steer he showed at the Florida State Fair on Wednesday.

Stadler Adwell became grand champion of the Youth Steer Futurist Show with his 1,261-pound steer named Chief.

A member of the FFA, Adwell joined the organization when he was in sixth grade.

"I joined because I've always loved animals," he said.

For the past six months, Chief has lived at Steinbrenner High, where Adwell fed him twice a day, cleaned his pen, trimmed his hooves and oversaw his care.

Chief will be sold at auction, and Adwell plans to continue his involvement with the fair next year.
