Sock hop celebrates 1950s-era dances

Celebrate back to school with a blast from the past. Tampa Whole Foods Market will host a free mid century sock hop and wine tasting, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at 1548 N Dale Mabry Highway. Customers can learn to twist and shout, mambo, and swing with dance instructor June Kittay.

Seminar to feature genealogy speaker

The Florida Genealogical Society welcomes genealogy expert Elizabeth Shown Mills, who will give four lectures as the speaker for its 2009 Fall Seminar, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Dale Mabry Campus of Hillsborough Community College, 4001 W Tampa Bay Blvd. Registration is $35 for members and $40 for nonmembers.

Two authors to meet the reading public

James Swain will read and sign his newest thriller, The Night Monster, at 2 p.m. Saturday at Inkwood Books, 216 S Armenia Ave.

On Thursday at Inkwood, meet University of Cental Florida literature professor and author Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes at 7:30 p.m. In her debut collection, Marielitos, Balseros and Other Exiles, she tells varied tales of Cuban-American exiles. Dog fashion show is for Humane Society

The Tampa Woman's Club will host "Strut Your Stuff" Doggie Fashion Show from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 2901 Bayshore Blvd. The dog entry fee is $10, and $5 for each additional dog. The event includes a doggie buffet, a doggie costume contest and refreshments. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Call (813) 839-7457.

Vendors sought for Stroll and Shop

Local vendors are needed for the first Stroll and Shop event down West Bay to Bay Boulevard.
